Mount Holly Real Estate and Homes - History
Before the first land grants were issued in the area now known as Mount Holly, Native American Indians occupied the lands. When the British colonizers came to the Carolinas in the 1700's, King George II of Great Britain started offering land grants to settlers in the territories of Gaston and Mecklenburg Counties. In fact, the real estate now known as Dutchman's Creek was originally land-granted to a man named James Kuykendall from Holland. The community would develop and become known as Woodlawn, after the post office that was erected there in 1838.
The town's economy would receive a boost in the 1860, when the railroads were constructed in the Carolinas, crossing right along
Mount Holly Real Estate. Like many of the other territories around the town, Woodlawn prospered because of the textile industry in the 1800's. The train station built in Mount Holly would increase the city's production and economy. As the city progressed, one of the stand-out mills in the town was the well-known Mount Holly Cotton Mill. The mill would inspire the decision to change the town's name to Mount Holly in 1875. A short, four years later, Mount Holley was incorporated by the North Carolina General Assembly. The Mount Holly Cotton Mill still survives today and it holds the title as the oldest mill in the county of Gaston.
Throughout the 1900's,
Mount Holly continued its steady progress to becoming the city it is known as today. Electricity was introduced to the city as the 1900's rolled around, creating better standards of living and a more efficient business sector. Another railroad was established in 1911, bringing even more business and more people to the city. Like many of the municipalities in the Charlotte metropolitan, the textile industry in Mount Holly started to die down. The introduction of new businesses, schools, companies, and corporations changed the face of the economy, influencing further development in Mount Holly. Today, Mount Holly's progress has been boosted by the booming economies of the metropolitan area, especially the cities of
Gastonia and Charlotte.
